Harris Smith is based in Melbourne, Australia and has been a successful professional artist for over 40 years. Trained in traditional painting techniques and methods, and with qualifications and experience in secondary art education, the artist has studied painting throughout life and using nature as an important source has evolved a personal approach to subject matter which is sensual, evocative and joyous.
With travels throughout Australia and in Europe, Harris Smith has observed land forms and light and is inspired by the haunting beauty of the Australian landscape which for this artist often carries a lingering presence of the past. Harris Smith draws on a rich source of imagery from gardens, valleys, pastoral areas, coastal scenes, towns and cities and keenly observes the human interaction within these places. With reference to some aspects of early impressionists, the artist adds emphasis through a selective vision which creates a lyrical comment and strong sense of place.
Harris Smith is the recipient of many prizes and awards including Castlemaine, Camberwell, Brighton and Box Hill Rotary Art Exhibitions. The artist has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally since 1978 and is represented in many private and some civic collections in Australia and overseas.
